A Sunset Surprise Proposal in Downtown Tampa

Candles, Florals, and a Waterfront “Yes” Some proposals are sweet and simple.

Others feel like something straight out of a movie. William planned one of those unforgettable moments for Lexi right in the heart of downtown Tampa, Florida. With the city skyline behind them and the water glowing at sunset, he created a proposal that was equal parts romantic, thoughtful, and beautifully planned.

The setup was breathtaking. A white heart-shaped arch framed the waterfront view, surrounded by rows of candles, florals, and a petal-lined pathway leading up to the moment that would change their lives forever. The design and arch installation were created by AC Production Co, a talented local event and proposal planning team that knows how to turn a vision into something truly magical.

As a photographer on their trusted vendor list, I occasionally help with a few details when needed, and this day was no exception. Between the Tampa breeze and the waterfront location, those rose petals had a mind of their own. There was a brief (and slightly comedic) battle with the wind while we worked to get everything just right, but in the end the setup looked absolutely stunning.

Sometimes photography involves a little more than just holding the camera.

Planning a Proposal in Downtown Tampa

One important thing couples don’t always consider when planning a surprise proposal in downtown Tampa is parking.

Between the waterfront views, restaurants, and parks, it’s one of the most beautiful places in the city to pop the question, but it also means it can get busy. If you’re planning something similar, arriving early is key. Give yourself time to park, walk to the location, and settle in before the moment begins.

Budgeting a little extra time (and a few dollars for parking) can make the entire experience far less stressful. The last thing anyone wants during a proposal is to feel rushed.

Trust me, the view is worth the walk.

The In-Between Moments

While I was waiting for William and Lexi to arrive, I had one of those unexpected moments that only seem to happen during photo sessions.

A group of young boys wandered over and asked if they could film a TikTok video nearby. They spotted the arch and asked if I would help them incorporate it into their video. I have no idea if that TikTok ever made it onto the internet, but it definitely made the waiting period entertaining.

It was one of those small, funny moments that reminded me how alive downtown Tampa always feels.

Then it was time.

The Moment Before the Moment

William arrived early, which gave us a little time to talk before everything began. Those quiet moments before a proposal are always special. The nerves are there, but so is the excitement.

He shared a bit about how they met, their adventures together, their travels, and the life they’ve been building side by side. And of course, he didn’t come alone.

Their pup was part of the plan.

The little dog arrived wearing the cutest bandana that read “CLM” with a heart around it, a small but meaningful detail that made the moment even more personal. Including pets in proposals is always such a special touch because they’re part of the family and part of the story, too.

As we waited, something really beautiful started to happen. People began to notice the setup.

Boats slowed down along the water. Couples walking nearby paused. A small crowd of onlookers gathered, quietly curious about what was about to unfold. It felt like the entire waterfront had become part of the moment, a group of strangers simply happy to witness something joyful.

The Surprise

When Lexi arrived with her friends, the surprise was immediate.

You could see it the second she spotted the arch and the candlelit path. That mix of confusion, realization, and excitement that happens all at once. And then everything else disappeared.

It was just the two of them.

William led her down the path of petals, surrounded by flickering candlelight and the soft glow of sunset over the water. The world seemed to pause while he asked the question that had been carefully planned for weeks.

The answer, of course, was yes.

Capturing the Beginning of Forever

After the proposal, the energy shifted from nervous anticipation to pure joy.

They laughed, hugged, and celebrated while curious onlookers cheered from nearby. It quickly turned into one of those sessions where the couple simply exists in the moment together. The prompts became giggles. The poses became playful movement. The way they looked at each other said more than anything I could direct.

Their connection was effortless.

As the sun slipped below the Tampa skyline, the session slowly transitioned from golden sunset light into evening. The candles began to glow brighter, and the soft light from the moon reflected on the water.

Watching their love in that quiet, candlelit atmosphere felt almost cinematic.

A Tampa Proposal to Remember

Proposals like this are why I love photographing engagements across Tampa, Central Florida, and the Gulf Coast. Every couple brings their own story, their own energy, and their own way of celebrating the moment that changes everything.

For William and Lexi, that moment happened along the waterfront in downtown Tampa, surrounded by candles, florals, and a crowd of strangers cheering them on.

And it was beautiful.

I’m so incredibly happy for these two and the life they’re building together. Their laughter, their connection, and the way they looked at each other that evening is something I won’t forget anytime soon.

Here’s to their forever.
