Don’t Skip the Details

In every session, whether it's celebrating a senior’s graduation, capturing the love between a couple, or documenting time with your family the big picture is important, but the small details can make just as much of an impact. These subtle elements often go unnoticed in the moment, but they stand out in your final images, for better or worse.

Before your session, take a few moments to check in on the small things. Start with your pockets - remove phones, keys, and anything else that might create awkward shapes or bulges, especially in tighter-fitting outfits. Clothing should be freshly steamed or ironed, collars adjusted, and hems straightened. Simple adjustments like these help your photos look polished and intentional. Here’s some more ways to prep for the small stuff depending on your session type:

Graduates

Graduation portraits are a once-in-a-lifetime moment. Let’s make sure every piece looks as sharp as you feel.

  • Steam or iron your gown – Wrinkles are hard to edit out.
  • Secure your cap – Use bobby pins if needed so you’re not adjusting mid-shoot.
  • Tidy tassels – Make sure they’re hanging in the right spot and not tangled.
  • Straighten cords & stoles – Lay them flat and adjust them before photos.
  • Empty your pockets – No phones, wallets, or key outlines under your gown.

Families

Family sessions can get chaotic - especially with little ones but a few prep tips can go a long way.

  • Remove all wristbands/hair ties – Especially on moms, teens, or older kids.
  • Wipe faces and noses – Bring a small pack of wipes just in case.
  • Coordinate—not match—outfits – Neutrals with a pop of color photograph beautifully.
  • Mind the shoes – Clean or wipe them before the session, especially for outdoor shoots.
  • Tame the flyways – Bring a small brush or hairspray for a quick touch-up.

Couples

The connection is the focus—but distractions in wardrobe or accessories can pull eyes away.

  • Check your hands – Clean nails, no chipped polish, rings on and secure.
  • Necklaces centered, collars adjusted – A few seconds of prep saves time in editing.
  • No phones in pockets – This goes for both of you.
  • Comfortable shoes if walking – You’ll be moving, lifting, spinning, and strolling.
  • Clean glasses – Smudged lenses can affect otherwise perfect shots.

No matter your session type, arrive with a few minutes to spare. This gives you time for any last-minute fixes without feeling rushed. I’ll be there to help guide and adjust as we go but the more we handle before the session, the more time we have to focus on capturing real connection and emotion.
