Why Outfits Matter (But Not as Much as You Think)

When it comes to planning a photo session, one of the biggest questions I get is: “What should we wear?” Outfits definitely play a role in how your photos look, but the truth is, they don’t have to be complicated or stressful. The best wardrobe choices are the ones that reflect who you are while keeping comfort and confidence front and center.

Think About Colors & Purpose

Before pulling outfits, consider the why behind your photos. Are they holiday cards? A family photo update? A once-in-a-lifetime engagement session? Seasonal tones can help guide you, think soft pastels in spring, rich earth tones in fall, or crisp neutrals for timeless holiday portraits.

Matchy vs. Coordinated

Gone are the days of everyone in the exact same shirt. Instead, aim for complementary colors and textures that tie together without being identical. Think navy paired with cream, or warm browns alongside soft greens. This approach looks more natural while still feeling cohesive.

Comfort Is Key

You want to feel good in your clothes because if you’re tugging at a neckline or adjusting straps every few minutes, it will show. Choose outfits that move with you, not against you. For kids especially, comfort means fewer meltdowns and more genuine smiles.

Location Matters

What you’d wear to the beach isn’t what you’d wear in the forest. Flowing dresses work beautifully by the water, while boots and layers feel more natural among the trees. Think about your setting and pick outfits that not only look great but also make sense for where you’ll be.

Plan for the Unexpected

Especially with kids, a backup outfit can be a lifesaver. Between sticky fingers, snack spills, and little adventures, it’s always smart to have an extra option tucked away, just in case.

At the end of the day, outfits matter, but what matters most is capturing your connection, your laughter, and your love. And to help ease the stress even more, I’m growing my very own client closet a collection of versatile, photogenic pieces that will soon be available for sessions. More to come on that soon!
